You may have seen some mushrooms popping up in your garden
beds. Usually, you see them most in beds that are mulched with bark or
shredded wood; essentially a recycled wood product. Yet, will these kings of the fungi kingdom kill your plants? The answer is...it's very unlikely!
Recent research suggests that mushrooms are not only beneficial to many plants, but that mushrooms can provide a way for plants to absorb nutrients. By breaking down the woody “waste” material they sit on, mushrooms are returning nutrients to the soil which then can be used by
plants.
Come learn from Mushroom Festival coordinator Scott Koch on which mushrooms are beneficial to a garden, and which ones you should be weary of. Scott's lecture will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 11 in the program room at Wilkinson Public Library
